The Domesday Book of 1086 records the existence of a Church in Dummer. The oldest part is the 12th century south doorway, now a round headed window whose central stone mullion is being repaired in 2025 with help from a National Churches Trust grant. 

There is a rare 15th century rood canopy, a 16th century gallery and one of the oldest pulpits in England. There is a wooden bell tower with 5 bells. The oldest bell is dated 1590. 

Jane Austen is said to have worshipped here when visiting her friends, the Terry family, who lived next door.
