Celestial Church of Christ
Peckham, Greater London
A Pugin church at the heart of a vibrant parish community and the home of the only Norbertine community in England.
Peckham, Greater London
The church was designed by EW Pugin and built in 1862. It is a gothic church with many beautiful stained glass windows. The west end window a particularly beautiful depiction of the seven sorrows of Our Lady. The light pours through the windows on the south side of the church which creates a beautiful and peaceful space. The church is open every day and there are always parishioners in the church praying. The statues in the church are all well worth seeing. The stations of the cross are statues on plinths, rather than simply paintings, whcih makes them unusual and worth seeing.
It is the only Norbertine priory church in England and through out the day, the canons sing the divine office. Morning prayer is sung at 7am and evening prayers at 6pm. Pope Francis has also made it a jubilee church in 2025 which makes it also a place of pilgrimage.
Added to this, outside the church, is the only war memorial in Peckham.
