The original church was built in the Romanesque or Norman style, parts of which can still be seen today. This church was subsequently rebuilt from around 1250 onward in the Gothic style, a process which took about 275 years and resulted in the incredible structure seen today.

With the most complete set of monastic buildings in the country, a Georgian square and series of streets, the remains of Roman barracks on the Dean’s field and the largest open green spaces within the walls, visitors can experience everything the cathedral has to offer.

Our Refectory Café remains the perfect post-tour pick me up, and the inspiring gift shop has a wide range of beautiful things to remind you of your visit, including some stunning local produce courtesy of the bees in our new Falconry & Nature Gardens.

The largest venue in the city for orchestral performances, concerts, and charitable fundraisers, Chester Cathedral is a centre of musical excellence with its weekly organ recitals and hosting of the finest choirs in the country.

As part of our visitor experience we offer free tours of the cathedral’s ground floor and our tower tour with a twist will allow you to immerse yourself in our unique blend of medieval and modern history. See one city, two countries and five counties from the top of the cathedral tower and climb through 900 years of history and discover our hidden spaces.
