United Church

Built in the 1850s within part of the county jail, the building was rearranged internally in 1990 to create a light-filled sanctuary upstairs and community premises downstairs.

United Church was formed in 1974 from two nearby Methodist churches and the United Reformed Church located in the current premises. It was built as a Congregational Church in the 1850s in gothic revival style, using part of the previous county jail. The interior is a long octagon which has been split horizontally, with the sanctuary upstairs. Particular features include the hammerbeam roof, the octagonal rooflight, a Victorian clock with gothic surround, gas light fittings, and organ case.
