St Wilfrid

St Wilfrid's Catholic Church is known as the Mother Church of the city of York.

York, Yorkshire

Opening times

Duncombe Place

It is also the first Catholic church to be constructed there, built in the Gothic Revival style in 1862-64 near a former Catholic chapel established in 1742.

The arch over the main door has the most detailed Victorian carving in the city, and the tower, visible around much of York, is designed to appear taller than York Minster in the background, even though it is not.

The church is also rich in sculpture, paintings and stained glass.
