The Moody family worshipped and are buried here. James Moody, was a renowned photographer and his daughter Fanny, was the famous opera singer known as The Cornish Nightingale.

St Stephen’s first met in the blacksmith’s shop before the church was built in 1886. With the local mining connections it is no surprise to find a small granite bellcote, surmounted by a plain granite cross on the west end of the church, which houses a single bell, which is inscribed: ‘Great Tywarnhayle Mine’.

The brass plaque in the south transept is in memory of Revd Manley, who served 37 years as Vicar of Treleigh. He was the inspiration behind the building of the church and the move from the blacksmith’s shop.

Below this plaque stand two candlesticks which were used in the blacksmith’s shop.

Don’t miss our unique altar frontal, with its distinctive green and gold design, incorporating a Celtic cross with a background of local landmarks and industry. This was exhibited in Wren’s Crypt at St Paul’s Cathedral in 1990.
