The church is said to be dedicated to the Irish Princess Piala who was martyred here in the 6th century. The story of her life and the life of her brother Prince Fingar (called Gwinear after his conversion) is available in the church.

However, the site of the church was Christian for more than a century before the arrival of the Irish saints. Besides the chiro lozenge there are two gravestones dating from 5th and 6th century plus the wonderful 10th century stone cross portraying the crucified Christ.

There are bits of the Norman build incorporated into the present church which was reconstructed in the 15th century and again in the 1860s. There are A4 laminated guides to the church in five languages.
