An interesting relic said to be the mummified hand of St. James the Apostle is said to be preserved at the church. This relic had been in the keeping of the Reading Abbey until the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the 16th century. It passed through many vicissitudes after that, until it was purchased by Scott Murray in 1856 for his private chapel at Danesfield. It was finally brought to the church of St Peter when the estate was sold.
