St Peter Hungate

Set amid cobbled streets and old cottages near the top of Elm Hill, this church dates from the 15th century but looks older than other Perpendicular examples in Norwich; perhaps partly because of its dumpy, pyramid topped tower.

This was the result of emergency repairs in 1906; part of a long struggle to keep the church standing. Saved from demolition, the building became a museum of church art in 1936, providing a home for fixtures and fittings from the city's other disused medieval churches.

Now called Hungate Medieval Art, it is an interpretation centre focusing on the stained glass and other medieval artefacts of Norwich churches.

Temporary exhibitions are held here, as well as activity workshops for adults and children. St Peter Hungate itself has excellent stained glass, and a fine hammerbeam roof with carved angels, and there are good bench ends from elsewhere.
