St Augustine
Skirlaugh, Yorkshire
Built between 1401 and 1405 it is a Grade i listed building and one of the finest example of Perpendicular architecture in the country.
The church consists of the original aisled chancel, with large Perpendicular windows, and a later west tower, rebuilt in 1787.
There are eight choir stalls with misericords (one depicting a man looking through his legs, two screens partly dating from 1531, a 17th century pulpit with decorative panels and a late 18th century font.
But most remarkable of all are the medieval alabaster effigies located in the aisles and chapels. Finely carved with life like faces, detailed armour and the dignified costumes of the late 14th century, these knights of the Hilton family and their ladies lie on tomb chests decorated with shields and angels. They have a very powerful, majestic presence and are surprisingly well preserved.
