This huge church is built of red brick with stone dressings; the interior is faced with two inch buff bricks. At its consecration it was described as a ‘light, lofty church of brick and stone in modern Gothic style’.

The Player family, of tobacco fame, funded its construction and there are numerous plaques around the church expressing gratitude particularly to John Dane and his wife Margaret, for they ‘built this church’.
