St John at Hackney

Built in 1792 on a Greek cross plan, this huge structure stands on the site of the old church of St Augustine, dating back to 1275.

That medieval church was demolished in 1798, except for its tower, which was left intact to hold the bells as funds did not run to building a tower on the new church until 1816.

The original St Augustine Tower remains standing to this day in the church gardens, which also contain some impressive headstones and monuments.

After a fire in 1955 destroyed some of the interior, the church acquired altar hangings designed for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II.
