St Barnabas's church at Tuffley on the outskirts of Gloucester was built in 1938-40 to the designs of Nugent J Cachemaille-Day. It is an impressive reinterpretation of late Gothic form in a totally modern idiom. It has an austere, almost power station like presence outside, a massive brick block that conceals a light cathedral-like space within, surprisingly graceful after the solid mass of the exterior.
