St Peter
Brafferton, Yorkshire
The 15th century parish church of St Peter's Brafferton overlooks the River Swale where St Paulinus baptised 10,000 people at Christmas in AD 626.
St Mary’s is a beautiful sandstone church with wooden tower, well suited in size and appearance to it’s rural village setting.
Originally built in the 12th century, our village church was substantially added to in the 14th century, and in the 15th century a north chapel was added and a wooden tower was built at the west end. In the 19th century the church was substantially restored, and a south aisle was added. The church is sandstone with a slate roof. The wooden tower, rare in the north of England and believed to be unique in Yorkshire, is weatherboarded and has a tiled pyramidical top.
Sheep graze the churchyard, and red roses complement the sandstone church well – the churches is at its best on a summer morning.
