St John's church in Purton was the result of an appeal to serve the local communities of Purton, Halmore, Hinton, Brookend and Sharpness, launched in October 1873. Just over a year later the church was opened in November 1874, the build had cost the sum of £722. In more recent years, there has been the addition of some quite outstanding stained glass windows over the altar.
