The hamlet of Little Cheverell is mentioned in the Domesday Book and there is known to have been a church on the present site since at least 1291.

The church tower, with its 15th century west window, is said to contain traces of Saxon work and the two bells in the bellchamber are of early 14th century origin, probably cast in Salisbury and reckoned to be amongst the oldest in Wiltshire. There are two elaborate 18th century memorials high up on the inner tower walls and the clock in the chamber above, which dates from Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee year, still strikes the hours on one of the original bells. The bell tower is connected to the nave by a fine Perpendicular arch, which displays a number of apotropaic marks dating back to medieval times. The main parts of the present church were rebuilt to designs by Thomas Cundy of London in 1850, the surviving elements of the earlier church being the tower, the north porch and the priests doorway that has been built between the vestry and the chancel.

The coat of arms on the wall above the font is that of William IV and the carved reredos was presented by the rector early in 19th century. The converted chamber organ, which replaced an harmonium shortly after WW I, was rebuilt and moved from the chancel to its present location in 2006. There are three still largely legible floor vault stones dating from the 18th century and a number of fine brass and marble commemorative tablets on the walls.
