Lisburn, County Antrim
Lisburn holds a prominent place in Methodist history, having been visited by John Wesley several times in the 1770s and 1780s. The town’s first Methodist chapel was built in 1774 and served the town until the early 1870s when a plot of land was donated by Sir Richard Wallace (of The Wallace Collection) for a new church building. The foundation stone of the new 'Wesleyan church and schoolhouse', now Seymour Street Methodist Church, was laid in 1874 and the building opened in 1875. Beneath the main church sanctuary is a large schoolroom originally serving as a Sunday School and later, from 1886, as a National School. Today, this space serves as our Community Hall, a lively hub for activities and events for all ages.
Architecturally, Seymour Street is a highly decorative gabled church in a distinctly late Victorian style, and sets the architectural tone for the surrounding area. Notable features include the impressive pipe-organ, installed in 1920 as a First World War memorial, a traditional Rose Window, and four memorial stained-glass windows which fill the sanctuary with colour and convey the love of Jesus and the hope we have in Him.
Whether you are exploring Methodist heritage, interested in Victorian church architecture, or simply looking for a friendly place to pause, you will find a warm welcome at Seymour Street.
