New Chapel
Horwich, Lancashire
We are a small 'Chapel in the Fields' church and are 300 years old this year, with a warm, welcoming atmosphere and stunning views.
Financed largely by the Ridgway family, the church occupies a prominent position overlooking Horwich and is a noted landmark in the area.

The church was built in 1830-31 with a chancel added in 1903. A Memorial Chapel was created at the east end of the church building in 1950. The church tower houses a ring of eight bells, six of which were installed in 1831 when the church was completed. The bells were refurbished in 1913 when two treble bells were added and again in 2016, they are the only rung bells in Horwich.
In the interior, there is a white marble free-standing monument, the Praying Lady, which has a robed woman standing at prie dieu. There are other memorials and hatchments. In the south aisle there is a stained glass window dating from 1874. There is a finely carved altar and an impressive Reredos with cresting and canopy which dates from 1923. Above the altar the stained glass east window dates from 1927 but includes earlier decorative glass and the Ridgway family arms in tracery head.
The church has a Victorian stone font which was relocated, as part of the major reorder in 2009, to the east end of the nave. The majority of the oak choir stalls in the chancel, in use since the 1930s, were replaced as part of the 2009 reorder by choir chairs. The choir now use sixteen oak choir chairs specifically designed and made for the church by Ormsby’s of Scarisbrick. The reorder in 2009 installed a ramp to the main west entrance; upgraded the toilet facilities; created a narthex with a kitchen, creche and facilities for community use; and reordered the chancel and the nave.
