Matfen parish church is a popular attraction for local visitors, who love its peaceful. prayerful atmosphere. The Grade II listed church was built in 1842 by Sir Edward Blackett, who is buried here together with many of his descendants. The church has a particularly unusual outside staircase. and some beautiful 16th century alabaster reliefs depicting scenes from the early childhood of Jesus. The church in Lorna Hill's book 'The Vicarage Children' is thought to have been inspired by Matfen Church.
