Unlike the quiet side street you will tread to visit the church today, way back in the 12th century the wharf was just below the church was a busy inland port, with sailors and merchants busily going about their business.

The church of St Mary the Virgin sits right at the heart of the Kirkby Lonsdale community; as well as it being a place of regular worship it is a significant visitor attraction and runs many art and cultural events.

St Peter's, tucked away off the road, is a mix of architectural styles having been remodelled twice by former owners of the adjacent hall, and contains eight hatchments (funeral coats of arms) dating from 1770 to 1875.

The church is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086. A church of some kind has stood here on this site for over 1,000 years.

A small medieval parish church near the village of Llanbedrgoch in Anglesey, north Wales.

St Mary and St Michael's church is said to have very early origins, as 9th and 10th century richly carved crosses were found on the site and are now on display in the church.

The present church is Victorian, built in the 1860s and dedicated in 1868, but it replaced a Norman church about which, unfortunately, very little is known.

At the annual meeting of the Preston District Congregational Union in 1871, strong representations were made as to the necessity of building a chapel in Grange over Sands with services starting eventually in a room at the Liberal Club 1889, thanks to a grant from the Union.

Grange Methodist Church (1874) is the second oldest church in Grange over Sands, located in the town centre on one of the main shopping streets.

Appearances can be deceptive as, although rather unprepossessing on the outside, when you enter St Mary's church you’ll be greeted with the glorious colours of the ceilings, panelling and stained glass windows.

The parish church is an attractive building in a prominent position next to the clock tower in the centre of Grange over Sands.
