St Mary's is a Grade II listed building located in a conservation area, built in 1840 by Salvin at the sole expense of James Walker of Sand Hutton Hall.

With its ancient stone cross carved by Anglo-Saxon and Viking sculptors, its Norman arch and medieval font and stained glass windows, the church spans a millennium; cross the threshold and feel yourself stepping back in time.

St Nicholas' church stands on the site of a much older church. The nave and baptismal font date from the 14th, the chancel from the 15th century.
