After falling into disrepair St Mary's was rebuilt in 1879 by the Earl of Portsmouth. Its Norman roots can be found in the arch above the south porch and the small chancel window.

St Beuno, descended from the royal princes of Powys, was the most celebrated of the early Christian monks of North Wales and it was he who founded the 'clas' at Clynnog Fawr in 616 and died here in about 640.

The beautiful Grade I church we see today, situated by the River Bela, is the result of additions and adaptations through the centuries.
