St Mary's is one of the cradles of English Christianity, built on the site of a wooden Saxon monastery founded in 654 by St Cedd of LIndisfarne (who is buried here).

Coming into Saffron Walden from the west, St Mary's appears over ancient roofs in much the same way that it has for hundreds of years and the immediate approach to the church takes you through the unspoiled heart of the town. Photo credit: John Fielding CC-BY 2.0

A gem of a Georgian Roman Catholic pre-Emancipation Chapel opened 1821, and a rare example of believed only two such chapels in the country!

St Thomas Cathedral is the main church of the Syriac Orthodox Church in the United Kingdom.

The church was built as a Congregational Church on the initiative of a local resident, Benjamin Scott, Chamberlain of the City of London, in 1864-5.

St John the Baptist was built in 1914 as a Mission church so that parishioners could avoid the walk into Ringwood and was given the status of chapel of ease.

There has been a church on the site for about 1000 years.

Although The Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) built a Meeting House in Darlington in 1678 (when they bought the plot for ’35), the present structure was not completed until about 1846.

The patron of the parish church of St Peter & St Paul is the Dean of King’s college, Cambridge.

Dating from the 11th century, St Mary's has an interesting collection of stained glass, well worthy of a visit.
