In 1845, the Reverend Patrick Bronté, father of the famous novelist sisters Charlotte, Anne and Emily Bronte, appointed the curate the Revd Joseph Brett Grant to take charge of the newly formed Ecclesiastical district now known as Oxenhope.

The church dates back to the 11th century, although much of the present church is 13th century.

The outstanding feature of the church is the stunning murals in the chancel painted in 1904-5 by the Edinburgh artist Phoebe Anna Traquair.

Set high above the Stour Valley in North Essex, surrounded by rolling fields and an ancient Mount, St John's dates from the 12th century and is a place of simplicity and beauty.

The church as we see it now dates from the Saxon period but the original church was probably Celtic, right beside the sea with views across Morecambe Bay to the mountains of Cumbria and containing many important artifacts including the world famous Hog Back Stone, a Viking grave stone.

Marr featured in the Domesday survey of 1086. Seventy Roman coins were recently found in the area which provide evidence of the boundary line which Marr formed at the Roman Rickneild Street.
