St John’s church is a wonderful small church in South Yorkshire, overlooking grand views of the Dearne Valley.

The church was built about 1650 and was adjacent to Sir Edward Rodes’s home, ‘The Old Hall’, and used for worship by his family and tenants of his land.

From the west and south, the combination of village green, cottages and church at Cavendish is perfect, and makes one of the loveliest and most famous English villages scenes.

The church is at the centre of the village and since modernisation has been used as a community centre.

The church was built by the 2nd Viscount Halifax, keen to inspire the local community and encourage their spiritual wellbeing.

Since around 1150, the honey coloured Yorkshire stone church and tower of St Peters has been welcoming people to Barnburgh.

The church sits on a commanding hill and is visible from a considerable distance.

The 13th century limestone church with its tall early 15th century tower and steeple is Scrooby's focus.
