St Martin’s, dubbed the ‘hidden gem’ in Marple, is a simple Pennine sandstone building in the Arts & Crafts style, with windows and artefacts from that era.

From the churchyard there is a beautiful view over the little Glem Valley to the hall, seat of the Poleys (pronounced Pooley).

Originally consisting of a chancel and nave, the church dates back to the end of the 12th century and is dedicated to St. Wilfrid, as are so many other churches in the Trent Valley.

A major landmark at Wirral’s tip, the Dome of Home is visible from Liverpool to Llandudno in North Wales.

Elmstead is little more than a group of farms clustered round their church on the North Downs.

St James is a Grade 2 listed Victorian Gothic church, designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott, which has the tallest spire in Wirral.

Holme was a much more frequented place until the 16th century, when the River Trent changed course to leave it isolated on the eastern bank.
