An 18th century Quaker Meeting House within a walled garden.

Originally consisting of a chancel and nave, the church dates back to the end of the 12th century and is dedicated to St. Wilfrid, as are so many other churches in the Trent Valley.

A giant splinter of masonry clings to the side of the church here. Apart from the north aisle, which has been the parish church since the 15th century, it is all that remains of the great abbey church and its buildings that once stood on this site.

The earliest reference to a church is from 1141 although it is probable that one existed here well before the Norman Conquest.

The church is set back from the road and is surrounded by mature yew trees (one of which is more than 2,000 years old), with only the spire visible above them.

This rural church contains extensive wall paintings that were hidden from view until a bomb dropped nearby in World War Two, disturbing the plaster, which was removed, revealing the medieval wall paintings.

Step back in time at this unique and beautiful village church, almost certainly built in Anglo Saxon times, during the early 11th century and this building forms the nave of the current church.

Situated in the centre of Meltham and was consecrated on St Bartholomew’s day 1651 by Bishop Henry Tilson a former Bishop of Elphin in Ireland, the church is believed to be one of a very few in England to be consecrated during the Commonwealth period.

Holy Trinity has a fascinating history, dating back to the 15th century when a grant was made by Edward IV to the church (and confirmed by Richard III), the first stone building being completed in 1500.

St James was founded as a Chapel of Ease for Altham parish church in 1546, rebuilt in 1763 and extended in 1828.
