Largely medieval church displaying the evolution of a well developed 13th century church from a Norman core.

The first chapel on this site was a meeting room in a building also used as a pub called The Plough, which stood here in the 17th century.

St Mary's has occupied this site for over 900 years, although we are uncertain of the date of consecration.

Although St Nicholas is a large and imposing building, it served as a mere chapel of ease for nearby St Margaret’s.

St Mary's is in a most attractive setting in the Windrush valley near Burford.

Elstow's mighty 13th century bell tower, one of only a handful of freestanding church towers in the country, looks out across the spacious village green and stands side by side with the remaining part of a Norman abbey, which is now the parish church.
