Benedictine monasticism was part of the landscape of medieval Britain, but the Dissolution of the Monasteries brought an end to monastic life in England and Wales.

Dating back to the Norman Conquest, our church has one of the oldest examples of a medieval stained glass window in the country, dating back to the year circa 1320.

The church has been a part of the village since 1175 and in 2025 will be 850 years old.

The exterior of St Mary's successfully blends elegant Perpendicular lines with rustic stone, partly fieldstone and partly a type of deep golden green sand known as carstone, which came from a nearby quarry known as The Butts.

The remarkable feature of this church is the series of 14th century wall paintings which were discovered almost a century ago by Professor Ernest Tristram, the authority on such works and a professor at the Royal College of Art.

The church dates from the 12th century, with restoration was conducted in the 1860s.
