This modern brick church is the post war successor to St John’s, which was destroyed by enemy fire on 8th May 1941; the altar cross which was made into a processional cross for the new church.

In 1722 a fine early Georgian church was erected to the design of Thomas Eayre of Kettering (1691-1757), surveyor, clock maker, and bell founder (the bells here are by him as well).

It is unusual enough to see a church with both a tower and a steeple (there are only three in England) but this church is unique in having them placed at the same end.

The first church close to the river would have been on the strip of gravel which the present day church stands, there was no sea wall or river bank as we know it today.

Built for less than £10,000, this Grade II* listed building by Nugent Cachemaille-Day has sensational stained glass by Christopher Webb of heavenly hosts.
