A delightful medieval church ​to visit with some fantastic stories to tell in its medieval wall paintings and its important evidence of Civil War iconoclasm.

It is likely that there has been a church on this site from at least 1100, maybe earlier, when Hawkhurst belonged to the Abbot of Wye, and then of Battle.

St James stands as a gateway to the village of Burton Lazars, which it has served since the 11th century.
