Find a church

The church was established sometime in the 12th century and by 1356 it was dedicated to St Mary.

Acton Burnell Castle was the home of Robert Burnell, a close associate of Edward I who became Lord Chancellor and Bishop of Bath and Wells.

This is an ancient enigmatic building in a rural setting of Hart, adjacent to the remains of the de Brus Manor House and medieval fish pond field.

St Mary’s is as good an introduction to the development of Gothic architecture through the ages as you are likely to find anywhere.

Built mid-way through the 19th century, the church is undoubtedly one of the most significant and architecturally important buildings in Wood Green and sits in a privileged position at the top of what was once known as Jolly Butchers Hill.

The Edwardian façade hides a much older building.

Designed by Edward Pugin, son of Augustus Pugin, and was completed in 1856: amongst its glories is the stained glass.

Late 12th / early 13th century church, on a Saxon site on top of hill with stunning view overlooking River Tees.

Lesser known than its neighbour, Lower Slaughter, Upper Slaughter is equally pretty.
