The Cathedral of St Barnabas has been a place of praise and worship for over 170 years and was designed and built under renowned architect AWN Pugin.

The original chapel was built around 1746 by Richard Smedley, a mining magnate from Risley, on land given by the Earl of Stamford.

The foundation stone of the church was laid in November 1934 and the church consecrated on 15th February 1936.

The church of St Martha the Housewife was completed in 1956 and the dedication commemorates the service of women during the Second World War.
