It is perhaps not surprising, for the Benedictine community that settled at Downside in 1814 had its origins in northern France.

However, the great Roman Catholic church that was eventually built has work by eminent British architects including Sir Gile sGilbert Scott (nave and tower) and Sir Ninian Comper (great east window and Lady chapel furniture).

The church serves not only the monastic community but also the adjacent Roman Catholic boarding school.
