Castle Acre Priory

One of the largest and best preserved monastic sites in England dating back to 1090, Castle Acre Priory was home to the first Cluniac order of monks in England and the Cluniac love of decoration is still evident in the ruins.

The priory was founded in 1089 and originally was situated within the castle walls. But this situation did not work too well and about a year after the castle was built, the priory was moved to its present site
Like many other priories and monasteries in the UK, Castle Acre suffered under Henry VIII and was dissolved in 1537. It eventually was passed to the Coke family of Holkham Hall and the priory and castle are still owned by the present earl of Leicester.

Although now only ruins remain, they still offer a chance to relive what life was like living in this building. The west front is almost complete and the west end church gable as well as other architecture is rather spectacular.

Fine landscaped gardens provide many opportunities for picnics and walks. The property is now managed and cared for by English Heritage.
