First Church Belfast is the oldest surviving place of worship in the city, with deep historical roots dating back to 1644. Located on Rosemary Street in the centre of Belfast, the current building, designed by renowned Belfast architect, Roger Mulholland, was built on an elliptical plan. It opened in 1783 and stands as a landmark of Belfast’s religious and cultural heritage.
The church building is Grade A listed and is described in its listing as one of the finest examples of its type, containing original architecture and furnishings, historic detailing, neo-classical memorials and striking stained glass windows representing part of the early development of Belfast city. It has a significant historical connection to the Titanic through its prominent congregation members, including the ship's designer, Thomas Andrews, and the co-founder of its builder, Harland and Wolff, Sir Edward James Harland.
The church is renowned for its excellent acoustics and is often used for hosting music recitals and for recording performances. First church is open most days of the year, warmly welcoming tour groups and thousands of visitors to experience its rich heritage.
