800+ years of worship, Dalmeny Kirk is a gem of Romanesque architecture, certainly the most complete in Scotland.
The exterior stonework is distinctive, large, roughly cut blocks alongside columns with carved capitals in the windows. Finished in 1862, it is a great example of Gothic Revival.
The building sits on a small footprint but makes good use of a restricted site, roofs clambering upwards with tiered galleries creating space for itself that is not available at ground level. The soaring spire is a well known landmark and one of the tallest in the city.
The interior is spectacular, heart shaped and theatrical with a painted ceiling and two tiers of galleries that originally seated 1,200. The vibrant colours give an overall effect of richness and the eye is drawn upwards to the magnificent beamed roof.
