Marazion Methodist Church
Marazion, Cornwall
Built in 1895 this chapel is a fine example of provincial, gothic style with fine stained glass windows throughout.
Built on the site of two previous places of worship, All Saints is a delightful Victorian Church, designed by the architect James Piers St Aubin (a cousin of the, then, Lord St Levan of St Michael’s Mount) and was consecrated in 1861.
The church is situated in the centre of the town en route to the ferry to The Mount. Before you enter the church, to the right of the main door, there is a boot scraper, the trade mark of Piers St Aubin, to be found outside many of the churches he designed.
On entering the church your eyes will be drawn to the colourful kneelers, sewn as a celebration of completing the church’s roof repair and restoration in 1992. It has seventeen beautiful stained glass windows, one of which depicts the architect instructing the mason. In late afternoon and early evening, see the church bathed in a kaleidoscope of colour as the sunlight filters through the impressive west window.
As you enter the central aisle, turn towards the left, where you will see the newly commissioned painting by the artist, Zoe Cameron, representing the Cornish Legend of the vision of St Michael. The lower panels depict the significant Biblical events from the Flood to the Resurrection and on to offering help to a very modern rough sleeper.
In the Lady chapel there are a number of works by Martin Travers, an ecclesiastical artist, namely the granite altar, the Communion Rails, The Crucifix and a statue of The Madonna and Child.
