The church of St Mary the Virgin sits right at the heart of the Kirkby Lonsdale community; as well as it being a place of regular worship it is a significant visitor attraction and runs many art and cultural events.

The church is notable for its collection of seven rare WWI wooden battlefield crosses, gifted to the families when replaced by permanent stone memorials.

All Saints church has a thousand years of history in one building and there is too much to show on here so a visit is paramount.

The first thing the visitor will notice about East Harling's church is the very distinctive pinnacled wooden and lead cased spirelet, or fleche, crowning the tower.

Another Suffolk church in a superb setting, St Mary's is set on a hill, away from the road, overlooking the valley of the River Box.

The impressive remains of an abbey founded in 1123 by Stephen, later King of England, including much of the east end and west tower of the church, the ornately decorated chapter house and the cloister buildings.

14th and 15th century church restored in the 1870s with a magnificent organ and Saxon cross.

St Mary's stands on high ground above its very pretty village, which prospered during the late medieval cloth making boom.

Built in 1833 by William Carus Wilson, Founder of the Clergy Daughters School, as school chapel and parish church with a strong connection with local heritage and Bronte sisters.
