UK Church Architecture Awards 2021

The shortlists for the 2021 UK Church Architecture Awards have been announced.

Projects shortlisted include new gargoyles and work on the tower and spire of St. Mary's church in Adderbury Oxfordshire; a repair project which revealed previously unknown wall paintings at St Peter's church Knowstone, Devon;  a dramatic new streetside church in Monifieth, Scotland; the re-ordering of St Thomas, Salisbury's parish church and a reordering focusing on sustainability at Downing URC church in Cambridge.

Six projects have been shortlisted for the Presidents' Award for new church architecture and re-orderings.

Downing Place United Reformed Church, Cambridge - a reordering with a focus on sustainability. Archangel Architects
Holy Trinity, Colden Common, Hampshire - a small, crafted intervention. Connolly Wellingham Architects
Melbourne Methodist Church, Derbyshire - the creation of a new extension. Faber Architects

Five projects have been shortlisted for the 2021 King of Prussia Gold Medal for innovative, high quality church conservation or repair work.

St Julitta, Lanteglos by Camelford, Cornwall - repairs to a complex roof containing 15th century and Victorian material. Jeremy Chadburn Architects
St Leonard, Shoreditch, London - urgent repairs including the symbolic restoration of the historic church clocks. Roger Mears Architects

Award ceremony

The winning schemes are due to be announced at an award ceremony which is planned to be held at St Mary Magdalene Church, Paddington on Thursday 4 November 2021.

Young Church Architect or Surveyor of the Year

At the ceremony, the Young Church Architect or Surveyor of the Year will also be announced. The award is given to young architect or surveyor who has worked on a winning or shortlisted design entered for The King of Prussia Gold Medal or the Presidents' Award.

The UK Church Architecture Awards are run by the National Churches Trust and the Ecclesiastical Architects and Surveyors Association (EASA).
