Bier

Many parishes had a bier for transporting a corpse for the journey from the village to the graveside.

It was usually a wooden frame with rollers and four handles.  Later examples were fitted with springs and wheels, sometimes with rubber tyres.

Small buildings of wood or brick, usually in a corner of the churchyard near the entrance, were used to house the parish bier.
