Stained glass is used to add beauty and colour to churches. Often windows show biblical scenes.
Most medieval stained glass was lost following the Reformation and during the Civil War, when it was smashed by the iconoclasts.
There was a revival of interest in stained glass during the Victorian era, and much of what we see today is from that time.
Victorian stained glass was usually installed as a memorial to local people or to commemorate significant events.
