Lytham Methodist Church
Lytham St Annes, Lancashire
An awe inspiring interior with interesting examples of stained glass, including a modern piece by the acclaimed artist, Brian Clarke.
The original church dates from 1724, which was demolished and replaced in 1885 by the current sandstone building, covered by a Cumbrian slate roof. It is a typical late Victorian parish church sited on land donated by Madeline Clifton, widow of Thomas Henry Clifton.
Its design, by Messrs Aldridge & Deacon, of Liverpool, has an unusual open flèche bell tower located at the junction of the nave and the chancel roof. It has a side chapel, dedicated to 'Christ the Carpenter', so named to reflect the role of 'the many craftsmen and technicians in the village'.
The east end of church has a series of three stained glass windows depicting Jesus' birth, crucifixion and resurrection. The altar and rails were repurposed from wood from the original 18th century church.
The church bell was cast in 1743 by Luke Ashton of Wigan. The village war memorial is also housed at the west end of the church. Located in the sanctuary there is a fine example of an early 17th century solid wooden chair.
