Trinity Church
Sutton, Surrey
Trinity Church, as it is known locally, is a Grade 2 listed building, built in 1907 in the Gothic style and is a striking edifice in the centre of Sutton.
St John's was built in 1914-15 for a new community on what is now the extreme southern edge of Greater London.
Designed by the major architectural duo Greenaway and Newberry, it's a fine neo Gothic building with a good stone exterior and beautifully proportioned interior, still with its original fittings, almost all designed by the architects themselves, together with a font of 1706 originally in a church at Oxford.
The east window is of 1971 by stained glass designer Lawrence Lee of Coventry Cathedral fame and the great west window showing the Communion of Saints was brought here in the 1960s from a Victorian church being demolished at St Leonard's. The window's stonework dates from 1868 and the glass is of 1888 by the significant Victorian designer Nathaniel Westlake.
St John's continues to serve the Belmont community. It has a friendly congregation and in normal circumstances is open daily for visitors. A church history and guide are available inside. Belmont's shops, railway station and buses are close by. The church grounds have trees, shrubs and benches and are well used by local people and visitors.
