The church is a traditional cruciform listed grade one church due the to its history as a medieval church built in the 12th century and restored by Sir Gilbert Scott in 1851. The 1st Earl Cawdor appointed Scott, who produced a fine example of Victorian Gothic.

With a tall narrow arch to the chancel, colourful Minton tiles on the chancel floor and to the reredos and windows with middle English tracery. The 14th century vaulting in the transepts and rib vaulting in the Lort Chapel still remain in place. The church also houses a 5th century inscribed pillar laid flat beneath the window in the Lort Chapel and two 14th century effigies on the floor. It has a Jacobean monument to Roger Lort and is wife Abertha displaying their coat of arms. The church houses many monuments to the Cawdor family through the years. The stunning stained glass window in the south transept by O,'Connor depicts John Fredrick 1st Earl Cawdor as King Solomon supervising the building g of the temple in compliment for his restoration work.
