The church contains fine stained glass windows and carved woodwork as well as monuments to important local personalities including the engineer and colliery manager John Buddle. A number of people of considerable regional and national significance, including Richard Grainger, the builder and developer who was largely responsible for the redevelopment of Newcastle’s city centre in the 19th century, are buried in the graveyard.

The church opened in 1833 built as a Chapel of Ease for the convenience of remote parishioners whom previously had to make their way to St John’s in the city centre. It was built to a design by John Dobson, the northeast's most eminent architect of his time, who was achieving national fame. It is his first use of the Norman style and later additions continued in the same vein.
