The Minster Church of St Thomas

Newport Minster is a Victorian High Gothic Church built in 1854 to a design by S W Dawkes of Cheltenham on the footprint of the original medieval church. Queen Victoria was a significant benefactor and Prince Albert laid the foundation stone. It houses a fine marble memorial by Baron Marochetti, commissioned by Queen Victoria, to Princess Elizabeth, daughter of King Charles I, who died in Carisbrooke Castle and who is buried under the high altar.
