The church building was begun in late 13th century, with restoration work carried out by architects Paley & Austin in 1878 where a chancel and north aisle were rebuilt in dressed stone and ashlar. The square tower, which was built in the early 16th century is finished in white lime render with diagonal ashlar stepped buttresses to about two thirds of the height of the castellated tower. There are louvred openings on four sides of the belfry with a clock face situated on the southern elevation. The tower, three bayed nave slopes are covered in lead, the remainder in slate.

All walls pre-19th century are constructed in carboniferous limestone rubble walling with sandstone dressings to openings. The bell tower chamber has six re-cast bells blus two bells added in 1917, three older bells are located on the floor of the north aisle towards the rear of the nave. The oldest of these is dated 1530 and cast by John Woolley. The others are dated 1637. The chancel east window has stained glass set within perpendicular tracery depicting Christ's Ascension. The octagonal stone font dates from 1662. The organ, from around 1878, was made by Wilkinson & Son.
