St Mary the Virgin
Carlton on Trent, Nottinghamshire
A medieval church containing Norman fabric and which was a chapel of ease for the parish of Norwell existed on the site of the present building; it was demolished in 1849.
Awarded £5,000 for roof repairs to prevent water ingress and timber damage.
The Doomsday Book records a church and a priest in Sutton, although there are no traces of fabric visible earlier than the 13th century visible. The Meering Chapel dates from 1525 and has rich and ornate panelled battlements and four light windows and an impressive clerestory. There is a rare survival of an intact rood screen and loft complete with stairs - designed 1520-30s.
