The National Churches Trust has welcomed the announcement of £40 million of funding for the repair of church roofs made in the 2015 Budget.

Claire Walker, Chief Executive of the National Churches Trust said:

“Coming on top of the £15 million provided for roof repairs in the November 2014 Autumn statement, this additional £40 million of funding is further welcome recognition by Government of the importance to society of church buildings.”

“Making sure roofs are wind and watertight is a vital necessity for churches – if water penetrates inside a church, much greater damage can occur resulting in further expensive repairs.”

“Church buildings continue to play a vital role for society by providing a space for community activities, such as playgroups, cultural and social events.”

“I am sure that this funding will have widespread public support as churches are much loved buildings.  A COMRES opinion poll carried out in December 2014 showed that four in five (79%) British people agree that churches and chapels are an important part of the UK's heritage and history.”
